In 1861 Henri Harpignies was already a well-known painter and exhibited at the Salon since 1853.
Au bord du Canal was realised in 1861 during his trip in Plagny in Burgundy. He was seduced by this region
and bought a house in Saint-Privé.
The scene depicted here is typical of the activity on the waterways in the region. There was a great network
of canals which linked the Loire river basin to the Rhône and are still active.
This painting, recently rediscovered shows the influence of Corot with larges painted touches, great shadows
and delicate green variations.
The harmonious composition and the richness of colours at the end of day make this painting a unique work
of this great landscape painter
