Armand Guillaumin
Promenade en Ile-de-France, c.1875Guillaumin’s predominant interest here is to capture the effect of light - ultimately rendering colour as it is perceived. Adopting a soft palette of complimentary hues, the artist’s use of short, precise dabs highlights the sensitivity of the artist in response to the scene. The breakdown of the foliage into muted red and golden ochre tones captures the essence of the autumn season. The shadowed path is composed of a gentle crosshatch of bluish-grey and ochre, punctuated by sharp dashes of pink, emphasising a sense of calm. The soft-toned blue sky imparts a subtle luminosity, while the layering of vivid brushstrokes create a uniquely glittering tone.
